One person is dead and several others are hospitalized after a tourist boat capsized in a New York cave.

Emergency crews along the Erie Canal were called at around 11:20 a.m. Monday, June 12, with reports that a vessel had capsized at the Lockport Cave, located in Lockport in Niagara County.

The historic site is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Buffalo.

Speaking at a press conference hours later, Lockport Mayor Michelle Roman said 28 passengers and one employee were onboard the boat, which was operated by Destination Niagara.

One man, believed to be in his 60s, was killed when he became trapped inside the overturned vessel, officials said.

The water was shallow enough that most passengers were able to walk out on their own.

Eleven people were taken to the hospital, with the worst injury being a broken wrist, officials said.

All of those hospitalized were in stable condition and some have already been released, a spokesperson for Eastern Niagra Health System told Daily Voice.

Officials said none of the passengers were wearing life jackets and Destination Niagara did not require them to do so.

Everyone involved in the incident has been accounted for.

Gooding Street and several other surrounding streets were closed to allow rescue vehicles and crews to access the site.
